LinkedIn read receipts: indicators, settings and message privacy

Native messaging indicators and controls

LinkedIn read receipts can show that a connection has read your message, when the conversation's settings allow them. LinkedIn describes the read indicator as a small profile photo beside the message. A message that remains Sent does not prove it is unread: the recipient may have disabled receipts.

Use the indicator to understand what LinkedIn reports. It does not tell you whether someone understood the message, wants a sales conversation or has agreed to another contact. Read status, a reply and permission to follow up are different observations.

Distinguish Sent, Read and a reply

LinkedIn's message-indicator guide separates these states:

Native statusWhat LinkedIn reportsWhat you cannot conclude
SendingThe message is being sent; a failure produces an errorThe recipient has received or read it
SentThe message was successfully sent and will be delivered to the inboxThe recipient has not read it, is available or intends to reply
ReadLinkedIn marks the message as readThe recipient agrees with the proposal or wants a meeting

The same Help page says the indicator stays Sent when a recipient has turned off read receipts and typing indicators. That makes an absent read indicator ambiguous. Repeatedly checking it cannot tell you which explanation applies.

For the read signal itself, Delivery and typing indicators describes a small profile photo beside a message. Do not treat every checkmark or circle as proof of reading. Use the status and conversation context in the current interface rather than a symbol copied from an old screenshot.

A reply is stronger evidence of what to do next because it contains the person's words. A refusal, a question and an agreed date need different handling, even though all three are replies.

Turn delivery and typing indicators on or off

LinkedIn's current desktop Help gives this route:

  1. Open Me at the top of LinkedIn.
  2. Choose Settings & Privacy.
  3. Select Data privacy.
  4. Under Messaging experience, open Delivery and typing indicators.
  5. Turn the toggle on or off.

The documented setting covers both read and typing indicators. LinkedIn says that when it is off, nobody in the conversation, including you, can see whether messages have been read or someone is typing. For an ordinary conversation between two connections, a missing receipt can therefore reflect either member's settings.

These are the desktop instructions in the current Help page, checked on 4 November 2026. Mobile controls and labels may differ; this guide does not supply an unverified mobile walkthrough. LinkedIn's privacy-settings overview also places these controls under Messaging experience.

Turning the setting off changes indicator visibility. It is not a message-deletion command or a reason to assume the broader privacy conditions of the service changed.

Why a read receipt may be missing

Check the message route before diagnosing a technical failure. The general indicator guidance concerns messages between connections. It says receipts for a message request appear only after the recipient accepts the request.

InMail needs care. The general LinkedIn indicator page says InMail senders do not receive read or typing indicators. A separate Sales Navigator InMail response guide lists real-time receipts and typing indicators under sent messages. Those pages do not resolve every product and conversation condition in one consistent rule.

Do not promise universal InMail tracking from that wording. Check the status in the specific native inbox and use its applicable Help. For choosing between direct messages, requests and InMail, use the messaging-route comparison.

If the interface reports a send error, investigate that error. If it reports Sent without a read indicator, preserve the distinction: successfully sent and known to be unread are not equivalent.

Are LinkedIn messages private?

Read-receipt settings do not establish who may access message content. LinkedIn's Privacy Policy provides more relevant boundaries than the presence or absence of a checkmark.

Section 1.6 says LinkedIn collects information when members communicate through its services, including sending, receiving or engaging with messages. It also describes automated systems used to support and protect the service. That does not support a promise that only the two participants can ever access or process a conversation.

For employer-provided enterprise services, section 3.1 says an employer can review and manage use of those services. LinkedIn separately says it does not share personal messages or job searches with the employer unless the member chooses to share them through its services. The policy's example includes sharing information in a message to a coworker. Keep that qualification when discussing employer access.

Section 3.2 describes another condition: regulated members or their employers may need communications archived for legal or professional compliance, and LinkedIn enables archiving by outside services. A general statement that employer access or message retention is impossible would miss that exception.

For sensitive material, review the applicable product, organization and archiving arrangements before sending it. This article does not establish an end-to-end-encryption guarantee. Disabling read receipts alone cannot settle that question.

Use the actual conversation to decide on follow-up

A visible read signal without a reply is not an instruction to send another message. First check whether the original message needed an answer, whether you promised something and whether there is a current reason to continue.

In a hypothetical exchange, you offered a worksheet and the person asked you to send it. Send the worksheet through the agreed route; a missing receipt does not undo their request. If you instead sent an unsolicited introduction and saw a read indicator, you still have no evidence that they want a meeting.

Avoid a follow-up that accuses someone of ignoring a message because you saw a receipt. Add a useful clarification only where the context supports it, and respect a refusal or requested contact date. The after-acceptance examples and sales-message templates help choose wording from the exchange rather than from a status icon.

Campaign reply handling is a separate task. OutreachGenie's Message sequence uses tracked or detected replies to stop the prospect's current flow run; a native read receipt is not itself a reply. The reply-stop guide explains the operational conditions and limits. Keep the receipt, the person's actual answer and your campaign state distinguishable when deciding what happens next.

Questions that come up in practice

Common questions

How can I tell whether someone read my LinkedIn message?

For connection messages where the settings allow it, LinkedIn describes a small profile photo beside the message as the read indicator. A message remaining Sent can also mean receipts are disabled, so no visible read signal does not prove the message is unread.

Does a checkmark mean my LinkedIn message was read?

Do not infer reading from every checkmark or circle. LinkedIn distinguishes Sending, Sent and Read, and describes a small profile photo as its read indicator. Use the current status and conversation context rather than an icon from an old screenshot.

Can I turn LinkedIn read receipts off?

Yes. LinkedIn's desktop route is Me, Settings & Privacy, Data privacy, Messaging experience, Delivery and typing indicators. Turn the toggle off. LinkedIn says nobody in the conversation, including you, can then see read or typing indicators.

Can my employer see my personal LinkedIn messages?

LinkedIn's Privacy Policy distinguishes employer review of enterprise-service use from personal messages, which it says are not shared with the employer unless you choose to share them through its services. It separately describes regulated communication archiving. Check the applicable service and organization arrangements rather than assuming a universal access guarantee.

Do LinkedIn InMail messages have read receipts?

The general LinkedIn indicator guide excludes InMail senders, while a Sales Navigator InMail response guide lists real-time read receipts under sent messages. Those pages do not resolve all product and conversation conditions. Check the applicable native inbox and Help rather than promising universal InMail tracking.

Does a read receipt stop an OutreachGenie follow-up?

A native read receipt is not a reply. Message sequence uses tracked or detected replies when deciding to end the prospect's current flow run. Keep the native indicator, the person's actual response and the campaign state separate; reading does not establish interest or permission for another message.
